With Obdulio Varela in the lineup, Uruguay NEVER lost in the World Cup. He was the last Uruguay Captain to get his hands on a World Cup trophy. In my opinion there is no debate, the greatest footballer Uruguay ever fielded was Obdulio Jacinto Varela. He was born on September 20, 1917, and on September 20 we celebrate his centenary.

Happy Birthday Negro Jefe!

Yoru yes we got fullbacks tabarez just need to call them, check out lcb’s recent poll i listed them,. My team if i had to play the wc final now i’d hesitate between olaza and saracchi as left fullback:

——suarez——cavani
—————gda

——-torreira—bentancur
————-vecino
saracchi—————–guille varela
———–godin–josema

————muslera

speculation goes around that there will be two changes when there should be 3.. obligated change 1: nandez is out for suspension.. speculative change 2: el mono’s level of suckiness cannot be camouflaged anymore.. specially since when he’s in there the midfielder on that side becomes his personal assistant to control the flank (see nandez, later tata) speculative change 3: the level of confusion el cebolla provides has to stop.. it’s unfortunate to lose the only left-footer but he’s not helping things.. i think he got to the 100th game the other night.. that’s enough.. thank you, bye.. in light… Read more »

@yoru: because to get 46 goals from the rest to make up if he’s out, won’t be easy:

Guille varela’s tattoo was the reason why he’s in uruguay, not his level actually. He makes a good fullback, defensive skills, offensive skills, likes to go forward, tireless, etc. Until we got a better option. Believe me this team is quality 🙂 or just follow the guys. What’s your current 11?

hasn’t scored since the away Brazil game.. over 500 minutes.. but you may be mistaking me for a Tabarez apologist.. quite the opposite.. i want, as rabidly as the most rabid hincha to change this dreadful mold.. but i can’t deny the influence a world class player has on the team and the opponents.. would Arg. bench Messi? would Col. bench James or Chi bench Alexis..? no they wouldn’t.. and what have they done in these qualifiers that much greater than suarez? even tho you hate him, suarez makes our team better.. just by being there.. there’ll be a day… Read more »

well i don’t see the harm on playing HC.. it is fun.. and it gives you or anybody bragging rights.. just for example, the team that finished the game at venezuela, looked a lot like what we been wanting to see.. i remember Aussie putting a line-up quite similar.. and Nico, myself and others.. the truth is that, even tho Tabarez is trolling and taunting the media about “club the amigos” and “falta de recambio”, he IS doing now, what we were asking for a year ago.. and the pig applauds the “dancing” bear even tho the expert monkey shakes… Read more »

just for fun i give you a couple of formations, unlike tabarez’ who likes to sub suarez with statuani, making it the same but even more centralized and static.. i would play a different player, a play-making type which would allow me to change the obsolete 442 into something more fluid.. i have often said it is complicated to play two target strikers and make it work.. can’t really blame el viejo for keeping them in there.. we waited 80+ years to have a celeste striker pass the old mago’s 1940s record.. so now that we have prolific scorers he’s… Read more »

well well well.. have to see it to believe it but it looks like an all-attacking line-up with the obvious inclusion of a left-footed player on the left and the immensely obvious exclusion of the anchors that we been dragging down the highway for so long..
http://www.ovaciondigital.com.uy/eliminatorias/maestro-prepara-tres-cambios.html
notice that el viejo still brought back his old mules at the end, as if saying.. “yeah well i’m not getting rid of them just yet..”
still, a win for LCB.. obviously he has stolen our line-up sheet..

@ plaga Pereiro is not the winger you think he is. Way too slow for that. He’s more happy to play at 10, but at that position GDA is probably better. Pereiro is not a workhorse. Although I suspect him to play better, more inspired, for Uruguay than for whatever club, because he’s thoroughly Uruguayan. We don’t know, because T didn’t try him.
I hope you’re right T is about to sail away. It’s time for new blood.

I respect your opinion about the ideal 11 being pointless, of course its for fun, as anything else nt related if we’re not coaches. But hey we need joy in our life 🙂 on the guzman pereira, i dont find it as a bad thing that i wanted him a couple of months ago just like i did with porras, and now we got a JUVENTUS player who is younger and faster, i would like to win the lotery yes, but i would like to win 2 loteries better. I would like to bang martina graf, but if you offer… Read more »

The team looked enhanced with bentancur (very clean player), gda, vecino and valverde altogether. But we lack surprise on the sides, our fullbacks are tired, caceres is right footed playing on left cant neither send airballs to the strikers nor run comfortably. Thats why i might have liked urreta adding some speed as a winger. Mono and cebolla are yesterday news at international level. We cant ignore torreira, saracchi and guille varela any longer.

I enjoyed seeing the youth players, Valverde, Betancur and GDA at the end. I believe Nandez is being played out of position (until recently, he always played as a CDM) and so it is difficult for him to have an impact. I thought GDA had an impact in that he tried to take the game to Venezuela and forced their midfield to play more defensively. Cebolla has been one of my favs since Copa America 2007 but it is time to get Laxalt in the game. Caceres is also very rusty, I got tired of counting how many balls he… Read more »

With Peru & Argentina tying, they have 25 points. Even if Uruguay loses, and Peru or Argentina win, it would be a 3 way tie at 28 points but with Uruguay having a better GD of 10. Put away that calculator, I think we are through!

@4-3-3: there are two reasons nandez doesn’t have an impact: 1. he’s not very talented.. runs a lot and marks adequately but he errs too many balls.. and he’s not a truly offensive winger type with the natural “desborde”.. but thank-goodness he plays on the side.. he would be a liability in the middle.. please let’s not break the middle we have now.. it is ok.. could be really good, even great.. the only player i would be inclined to try in the middle is torreira because he has a knack for take-aways with very few fouls and also has… Read more »

sorry, one too many dos equis.. and the reason 2 about nandez.. he’s stuck back there most of the time, having to bail out el mono, that cannot stop anything..

The last 15 minutes or so of that match made me very happy. Seeing Valverde, Bentancur and Vecino together and then GdA come on was beautiful. We actually strung some passes together! I had all but lost hope in the Old Man, but over a looong, slow process he’s gone from not calling up any young players to calling them up but never playing them (instead bringing on old farts to sub out other old farts) to occasionally bringing them on as subs to now even starting Valverde. It’s happening much slower than we might want, but if you squint… Read more »

I would love to see us move forward with the below call-up list as we fine-tune ahead of Russia (barring some horrible results on Tuesday!). Of course, it gets rid of far too many of the Old Man’s favorites, but oh well, it work is slow and it was fun to put it together…

Uruguay clearly already thinks they’re through. That was a very boring match, in which they showed zero desire. Luckily Bentancur and de Arrascaeta got some game time. Let’s hope for some favorable results tonight that will qualify us before Bolivia anyways.

Update: We are all but qualified. Bolivia game will just be a formality. Let’s hope we can get some young guys out there!!
