Matches played on March 23 -24 • Peñarol 1-1 Danubio; Juventud 0-1 Defensor; Racing 0-1 Central Español; Wanderers 2-1 Fénix; Liverpool 4-2 River Plate; El Tanque Sisley 1-0 Cerro Largo; Progreso 2-2 Bella Vista; Nacional 2-2 Cerro.

Peñarol 0-1 Danubio

Canobbio’s set-piece gem in the 53rd minute gave Danubio the win. This was an up and down kind of game, although Danubio was just a little bit better. Truth be told, both teams combined to give one of the best second halves in Uruguay’s Primera as far as the year goes. With the win Danubio are now co-leaders along with El Tanque Sisley. Peñarol however still reign supreme in the Tabla Anual with 44 points. Peñarol are scheduled to play Central Español this Friday – although Central’s financial situation is casting a cloud on the fixture, since players have protested over practice conditions and have refused to practice – as per Ovación, the players did finally turn out to practice but did so without the coaching staff present! Danubio meanwhile bid farewell to their all-time scoring leader yesterday. Diego Perrone played his final match for Danubio in a friendly contest with Atlético Paranaense in a 1-1 draw. Danubio’s goal was provided by former NT player Richard Núñez. Perrone scored a brace once for the national team (during the Carrasco era), in a friendly match with Mexico which was played in Chicago, USA.

Danubio grateful to Perrone – he played his final game with Danubio yesterday.

Juventud 0-1 Defensor

In Las Piedras, Defensor defeated Juventud with a goal from Robert Herrera in the 87th minute. Juventud’s Matías Soto was ejected at the conclusion of the game.

Racing 0-1 Central Español

Julio Acuña’s Central Español overcame Juan Tejera’s Racing – Ronald Ramírez provided the game winner. Central played with a man down for the final 15 minutes as Andrés Fernández earned a red card in the 75th minute.

Wanderers 2-1 Fénix

Wanderers came from behind to defeat Fénix. Guzmán Pereira provided the equalizer and Federico Rodríguez provided the game winner. Fénix are dead last in the Clausura and 9th overall in the Anual.

Liverpool 4-2 River Plate

River Plate’s Bruno Montelongo nabbed a brace but it was Herr Doktor’s Liverpool who got the win, thanks to a hat-trick from Facundo Barcelo – Liverpool now have their second win in this Clausura.

Liverpool – finally percolating.

El Tanque Sisley 1-0 Cerro Largo

ETS continues to get wins, and thanks to a goal from Cristian Palacios in the 75th minute, ETS continue to lead (now with Danubio) the Clausura table. They are only 2 points behind Peñarol in the Tabla Anual.

Progreso 2-2 Bella Vista

Federico Laens nabbed a brace, which allowed Bella Vista to come from behind and draw with Progreso. This draw allows Bella Vista to stay outside the relegation zone.

Nacional 2-2 Cerro

If it weren’t for the Uruguayan National Team, everyone would be talking about how bad Club Nacional is playing as of late. Another game where the away team did what they wanted with Nacional in the first half. Cerro scored as early as the third minute with a goal from Mauricio Alonso while Pablo Caballero provided Cerro’s second – Juan Carlos Blanco (or John Charles White to his friends) made 2 changes which proved effective, he brought on Gonzalo Bueno who scored 5 minutes after joining the game and El Cacique Medina who scored the agonizing equalizer in the 92nd minute. Nacional trails Peñarol by 6 points in the Tabla Anual.

Nacional opted for Argentinean manager, El Vasco Arruabarrena, who only managed Tigre to guide Nacional back into the fight.

In the days following the game, el Chavo Diaz’ replacement was finally unveiled: Rodolfo Arruabarrena is now Nacional’s new man on top. Known as “El Vasco” he was previously Tigre’s manager – he will make his official debut in Week 7 against Bella Vista.

Penarol-Danubio was 0:1,and not 1:1 as is written above.Great match.Actually I watched all 3 matches.I liked also Progresso playing.like small Uruguayan Barcelona, short passes, and triangles. But Bella Vista was so much Garra Charrua fighting that they deserved a draw in the end.
Very good macth was Cerro-Nacional.Two different halves.First one Cerro’s second Bolso’s.
Impatient to watch El Tanque-Defensor today. To see again De Arrascaeta.Maybe Laxalt also has recovered.
What do you think about Herr Moeller as NT manager ?

      Whoops!
I’ll correct that when I get ahold of a computer… thanks!

Raul Moller would be good – could reinvigorate NT’s defensive fortitude… he’s the guy that brought along Ramirez for 1st team consideration in Penarol. ALTHOUGH… it was Victor Pua who gave Ramirez his first Manya call-up.

      Current score: 2
