“THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE NUMBER 1″
Watching Atlético Mineiro take on América-Mineiro, I was expecting to see Fabian Carini behind the posts but once again La Facha has been demoted to the bench. Vanderlei Luxemburgo (Atlético-MG’s coach) is auditioning the spot, unsure if to go with Carini or Aranha (see picture). Who are the fans behind? Believe it or not Carini. After América-MG scored on Atlético, the fans began chanting for Carini who was watching the game from the bench. I couldn’t believe it myself.
I wrote recently that Carini deserves another shot on the national team, although this recent demotion pretty much scratches his name from a possible World Cup roster, I don’t think Carini deserves this fate, but what I want and what the actual reality is are two different beasts all-together. What was Luxemburgo’s reasoning for doing this to Carini? In 14 games played, Carini has allowed 22 goals while Aranha played 13 games and allowed 14, statistically Luxemburgo is in the right… but Carini deserves a second chance. From the games I’ve seen Carini has shown a “born-again” combative grit that was absent during his recent Uruguayan NT call-ups (2007 thru 2008) ––– even the Atlético fans recognized this yesterday. Sadly a goalkeeper is always judged by his ability to keep a clean sheet and defenders never get as much of the blame as goalkeepers when the goals begin to rain.
Maybe Luxemburgo changes his mind but the possibility of Carini returning to La Celeste grows dimmer and dimmer.

lol not at all i like nacho…and lodeiro they should both be there. Nacho has just been unlucky with the injury and the falling out in Valencia.
ok my apologies, i thought you were more of a bolso fan than a celeste fan lol. im a big supporter of “good football” i want talented players wearing our jersey, because i know thats the only way to win a world cup. huevos? we already got them.
Ummm.. sorry, 8 years away from the cup and we put Carini in goal ? — no sir.. please refer to a previous blog you did on worse goals let in by a goalkeeper – the guy showed up TWICE on that list and you were generous. No thanks
Very true… another “To Shay” moment.
To be honest I didn’t want to include Carini in that post you are referring to but the goals were so ridiculous that I had no choice. He was playing alright though (In Brasileirao, despite the ridiculous goals), its too bad his career is in the toilet, oh well… guess we’re stuck with Castillo as a reserve.
How does everyone feel about Mauro Goicochea? the Danubio goalkeeper?
Official FIFA date: 3 March 2010 (T-34 days)
Date for Non-Local Players: 17 Feb 2010 (T-20 days)
Date for Local Players: ~ 21 Feb 2010 (T-24 days)
How time flies!
So, ladies and gentlemen, that gives us 20-24 days to find a bonafide back-up GK for La Celeste. And to figure out the rest of the NT puzzle. Unfortunately, that translates to about 3 more matches for non-local players and 4 more matches for local players. Who will impress? Will Lodeiro get a chance to play? How will Nacional feel releasing some of its players (Coates, Muñoz)a week before its game vs Banfield.
It’s unfortunate that FIFA has only allowed for one official date for exhibitions. The African nations are in the middle of their Nations Cup and have been allowed to call-up whoever they wanted. So, they are being allowed additional prep dates. Fortunately, for Uruguay, South Africa did not qualify for Nations Cup, so they do not get any extra games for preparation.
FourThreeThree—thank you for putting this into it’s proper perspective (LOL)… yes to me the Back-Up goalkeeper is the most important position, which may decide Uruguay’s fate in the upcoming World Cup (LOL)… But I love the freaking passion here, look how defensive people get when you mention just one name, that’s what we need more of, we need people losing their minds over call-ups, possibilities and media speculation over certain players on the NT…
I’m happy to see so much discussion over one really bottom of the totem pole position, important though as many of us have vivid memories of the Argentinean Pumpido fracturing his leg and being replaced by the back-up (Sergio Goycochea)in the 1990 World Cup.
Regarding the addition of more friendlies… isn’t the reason why they only did one Official Friendly Calendar Date related to accomodating the teams in Europe? They would have to stop the multiple leagues 4 or 5 times, and there will already be a work stoppage in June for most of the World (except the US!) — The rumor portion is that Belgium & Chile are already lined up as possible friendlies, while Uruguay’s chances of playing more friendlies may peter out at just 3, its still better than nothing. Granted that they’re not the ideal warmups we would all like, the Chile Friendly is very interesting since many of these Chileans played or have played in the Mexican League, I know it’s night and day and Bielsa plays Chile differently than Mexico but if you use the Chile Friendly to look at the local talent and the Belgium match as that “last look at most of the combined group” (which I imagine will include Abreu since he’s in nearby Brazil, Flaco in Chile & some of the Europeans) I think we’ll be alright, not great but alright. I’ve said it before, the fact that Uruguay is located geographically in “El Culo Del Mundo” always affects us in securing quality friendlies… Then we have to add the new AUF regime which wants to look at local talent over the European exports in these friendlies and we have a clash of expectations which eventually short-change the NT.
But as mentioned already by FourThreeThree, lets hope Tabarez & crew can figure out this jigsaw—-that being said, you know what I think they should do? Have Tabarez & Crew zip into Spain, and play against one of the autonomous Spanish National Teams (you can call up all of the spaniards & portuguese playing players for a weekend game)… I mean we’ve played 2X in the last 12 years against Galicia? Ok Lets play against Galicia, Euskadi & Catalunya (that’s 3 quality friendlies… the Catalunya would be even better if Xavi & Puyol get to play). That would get us an extra friendly or two under the cover of night
To me, this will be an interesting game because I think that by then, Tabarez will need to determine what style Uruguay will play. The purpose is not only to evaluate but also to develop some chemistry. Is he going to settle on four defenders? Will he decide on a 4-4-2 Diamond, and if so, who will be his “10″, Nacho, Nico, Canobbio? Will he call up Boghossian, the Argentian league is only starting up this weekend, so at most he will play 3 league games before the call-up. Who else will make a debut?
BTW, I saw that Argentina’s B-Tean had a difficult time with the Costa Rica U20 team. If Maradona was looking for some kind of saviour, he didn’t find one.
URUGOL is indicating that Uruguay’s B-Team (local players) will play against Chile in April. Who will surprise enough to win a spot on the A-Team.
Funny you bringing up Boghossian, Newell’s will be playing tonight (Copa Libertadores) so for those who still aren’t convinced, take a look at this guy very carefully.
Maradonas saviour is Banega. The next Riquelme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNqr-cnU27k

Munúa’s Málaga beat Forlán’s Atlético 2-0.
Also, looks like Ramis is heading to Cadiz of the Spanish 2nd division.
