Uruguay’s 2010 Jersey Announced (Uh-Oh)
Although reported by Quenonino, this story was originally announced on todosobrecamisetas.blogspot.com, it seems Uruguay has finally settled on the official World Cup jersey they’ll wear in the 2010 World Cup. Puma is still the brand the Celeste will slap on their shoulders… but it seems to me a retro-design inspired by the jersey, Uruguay wore in the 1990 World Cup?
I actually have a replica jersey (well more like a knockoff) of the 1990 Jersey which I bought on Ebay for $15 ––– nothing special about it, in fact the AUF logo is falling off, I wore the jersey when I went to see Uruguay play England at Liverpool in 2006. Approached by Sky News who wanted to profile a Uruguayan Supporter, I obliged… although they had no way of knowing if I was Uruguayan, I guess my dark Latin looks betrayed me (yet again!). So there I was right smack in the middle of an impromptu interview with Sky News, I was only 1 of 3 Uruguayans they could scrape up at short notice. I took off my coat to show the jersey, probably the dumbest thing I have ever done, since the temperature that day was freezing point!
So the Reporter asked me to sing a chant used by Uruguayans to spur their team on, of course I broke into the “Soy Celeste” chant but after the reporter decided it was rubbish he decided to ask me about the game instead. I told him I thought England was going to win the match despite Forlan’s inclusion. The interview came to an end, I put my coat back on then saw England defeat Uruguay 2-1 (at the 90th minute though). I remember Diogo having a good game, some deranged Uruguayan parading a giant Flag of Uruguay around the City and trying to find a cab to take me to my motel after the game was over — which took me over an hour, I was lucky enough to find one but then the cab driver proceeded to bore me with his uninspiring travel tales to China, and I remember it snowed that night. The next day my wife and me hightailed it back to London. Liverpool a distant memory.
What about the 2010 Jersey? I don’t know, a red Puma on it? and Tibetan inspired Suns on the actual Jersey? Kind of cheesy if you ask me. I always preferred the “Mundialito” Kit designed by Adidas in 1980. Simple and to the point. Uruguay in 1990 also wore the infamous bad luck “White Jersey” — I just hope Uruguay doesn’t wear white shorts to go along with the 2010 jersey… which I think they might since Italy is wearing black shorts this year (?) and Puma is also Italy’s jersey-maker.

worst jersey ever… oh wait there’s the beige jersey..
If they’re paying homage to the 1950 team – why not make a replica of that shirt instead of giving us something Erin Gray might have worn during Buck Rogers… holy crap did I just date myself — and the beige.. what, they ran out of all the cool colors? I think the kids at Dairy Queen wore that uniform last summer. I can just imagine the talk at the beach regarding the kit – the people are just recovering from the anthem…
I like the collar, I like the sleeves, and the red number thing doesn’t seem like a bad idea, although I wonder why they still haven’t released a picture of the back with the number
?? I hate the suns, it kind of reminds me of jerseys worn during the 94 world cup, MAJOR DON’T!!! Remember the Mexican jersey? YUCK! And that beige… What’s that got to do with Uruguay? Is Adidas gonna sick a green design on the Argentine shirt? Cause it would be the same thing… Oh well, I’m a jersey fanatic, but if Uruguay comes back with the WC they could wear speedows and Russian hats for all I care…
cordon 74 said: “people are yet recovering from the anthem” hahahaha epic phrase, couldt agree more, that anthem was an embarrassment, we uruguayans tend to be ridiculous, even though i do like this design and think previous design was gayer as it had the V-Neck that ive always hated wholeheartedly
im with meli, the puma should be in black
Ruben brings up a point about the Red Numbers… that may indeed be the “Maracana” homage Puma was referring to? In all those pictures of Maracana, specifically of Varela recieving the Jules Rimet trophy from Mr. Rimet, the number on his back is in red. I always assumed though that since it was a colorized picture, the number was really black? If you look up some pictures of actual jerseys especially the ones in the Maracana museum (not sure if there are any in the Centenario Museum, since the last time I went there was way back in 1987) but the numbers are indeed in red.
I just think somebody went a little too crazy, especially with the multiple suns. I agree with Ruben, it does bring back memories of the horrible jerseys worn by Mexico and also Brazil in 1994. Although the all-time Ugliest jersey has to be the one worn by Team USA during the same World Cup, the horrible denim grey jersey (ooof that stunk!). That particular jersey may be the ugliest NT jersey ever worn by a football squad, with the 1992 Lituania Tie-Dyed “Grateful Dead” basketball jersey being a close second.
I didn’t like the fact that it is 100% polyester but then I went to the local soccer store and saw that even the adidas Real Madrid shirts are 100% polyester. adidas does have the CLIMACOOL Flow Mapping which basically has a different looser knit to allow air to flow in areas like under the arms. This PUMA shirt looks like it will be very sticky, so I would have to buy 1 size larger.
BTW, I read that there is a petition on Facebook to get PUMA to change their shirts.
Kapow! Whamm! Boom! They forgot to put those words inside the little suns. I like the jersy but not the suns that look like Batman action bubbles.
Why can’t we go back to those simple designs we saw back in the 80′s, the Adidas and Le’Coq jerseys like we see in the last picture? 92 marked the beginning of a horrible era for jerseys, 06 marked the end. Do we have to go back to that again? Again I like the red number retro thing, but that night gown-like color and those Kapow ^^ (lol) signs kinda killed it… Keep it simple!!
I know I’m gonna get shot down in flames for this comment, but the best shirt I can remember was the third option for Korea/Japan: The white shirt with the flag over the left shoulder!! Simple and to the point WE ARE URUGUAYAN!
I like that 3rd jersey …
.and NicoGF I didnt mind the anthem – it was way too long but it was cool. The people entirely overreacted .. I mean I live in a country where Hendrix totally jacked up the anthem over 40 years ago and its still revered… embarrassment is when they let people like Rosanne and Carl Lewis sing.
I dislike Murga, and it was also way too long as you mention. Even tough I have respect for the guy who sang it EL ZURDO BESSIO or something like that, I guess hes the same who begins singing in Jaime Ross – Amor Profundo
Doesn’t Spain play with a beige shirt sometimes?
horrorosa !!!
