The Story of a Ridiculous Match
So much for astroturf/synthetic grass being a field advantage… I don’t know how in hell FIFA can justify 3 WC berths for the CONCACAF and allow anybody to play in the Saprissa Stadium? The game was like a ping pong match, bad bounces that confused the Costa Ricans and had the Costa Ricans playing a “pelotazo” match which they could not afford to get into with Uruguay, after Lugano scored with the most awkward looking goal I’ve seen in a while, the match entered into the ridiculous phase, Uruguay at times looked more comfortable on the fake stuff than the Costa Ricans did.
Uruguay showed a clear physical & football superiority over Costa Rica which seriously left me wondering how FIFA allowed this absurdity to reach this point? Clearly Costa Rica was outclassed before this match was even played and they never really threatened Uruguay, even going as far as making Muslera look like Lev Yashin at times with his “saves.” I was expecting more of a match but this CONCACAF side is nowhere near being a threat to Uruguay’s 2010 Qualification which is all but assured.
The Man of the Match was El Flaco Fernandez, who was “Johnny-On-the-Spot” — excellent with his precise passing and keeping the ball in play— While this was El Flaco’s game it clearly wasn’t Lodeiro’s, in fact the jury is still out on Nicolas Lodeiro ––– maybe the pitch was to blame? but what a sub-par performance.
Gracias Guatemala
Old Man Tabarez did his homework and as stated above, Uruguay looked comfortable playing on the artificial pitch and took Costa Rica out of the game, in fact I don’t know what Costa Rica was playing? But artificial pitches aside… Uruguay looked like they could’ve scored 10 goals on Costa Rica. Just looking at the Uruguayans, you could tell that the Uruguayans were conditioned better ––– Didn’t Costa Rica go to two straight World Cups? Did I miss something? This was like a bad MLS game minus the ridiculous club names.
The Future Looks Artificial?
I doubt that when FIFA proposes the creation of more artificial pitches that they’re talking about the toxic waste dump in San Jose, the pitch looked worse than El Centenario did in June. FIFA should burn all video tape of this match, its better to hide the incriminating evidence.
Costa Rica’s best player by my own estimation, Randal Azofeifa earned two yellows and drew the automatic red which means Uruguay will have an easier time in Montevideo with Costa Rica. I’m not guaranteeing a blow-out win for Wednesday but based on what I saw from Costa Rica last night, its clear that they’re not ready for prime time and that Tabarez & Company are a shoe-in to go to the “Big Show.”

Yoru- I did not say the goal was born out of Lodeiro’s CK. What I did say is that Lodeiro CKs were 90% accurate. Just remember Suarez delivering them, could have this ended up in a goal? that was my observation.
And let me tell you.. you are too confident my friend. I just hope you are right, but I want you to realize that losing is always a possibility (I just want to prevent you from committing suicide in that case, which looks so unlikely to you, lets not get too carried away I say).
Maybe I’m too nervous, but I reaffirm, games are won on the pitch and nothing is over just yet.
Ha-Ha… Nico my friend theres absolutely no need to get nervous. This upcoming game is in the bag. I’m not being overconfident, had I seen something in Costa Rica’s style of play then I would be nervous but what I saw was nothing. This is an Old School Repechaje right out of the 1980s… the problem seems to be that most of us are used to the “grind it out” Repechaje battles with Australia.
Forlan will get us to the World Cup (wow can’t believe I just said that!)
At the beginning, after knowing the results of 14/match, I was confident about Uru but now I have doubts, I cannot be that 100% confident.
Mister Yoguis is right, Costa Rica didn’t show nothing to be worry about but circumstances are different now XD so I’m not sure.
When they’re so close to classify in the World CUP I think that situation forces the team to think seriously about the next step/match, at least Costa Rica resigns and wants to give up to World CuP XD and let Uru go for it.> That wouldn’t be logical but who knows, maybe they don’t care> not very logical either haha^^.
I’m not sure.
They are afraid of us Meli, that’s a certainty and talking about footballing arguments, they have a few to defeat us (neither many, nor nothing as Yorugua states, I believe).
Yoru, they showed nothing there, but neither did we. It looks like it’s impossible to play football in Saprissa. We are gonna watch a real football game in Montevideo, I’m still a bit nervous. Can’t wait.. I’ve been losing weigh these days. Lift me up guys, but not by saying we are in South-Africa already you will, don’t wanna talk about what has been done when nothing has actually been done just yet. Hope you all can get my point.
I agree with Yoru, I was confident La Celeste would come through this with no problem all along, regardless of my (and our) concerns with the quality of the players Tabarez selected.
Let’s not forget that the previous repechaje was against the Oceanic Winner, not the 4th best in CONCACAF. Believe it or not, I would have been eating my fingernails to the bone had we been up against New Zealand this time around!
hey big fan of the web site… as a Uruguayan living in Australia i would of pefferd new zealand….but that doesn’t matter…
i hope the players arnt over confident, as we are not the best players at home… they played crap at home and so did we… they probably had a better 2nd half than we did…i do hope he plays a 4-4-2 or a 4-4-3 coz they are going to have to take the game to us, and on the counter attack is when were at our best, we struggle taking the game to teams…the game is defiantly not in the bag they score 1 stupid goal and things get complicated….
I’m totally with danubiano, if they score things will get ugly. Our crowd will play against us by its noisy silence.
btw, danubiano, I hope we can play 4-4-3 just like you say, but I don’t think FIFA allows that
thanks for supporting the site.
yeahh lol that would be nice , i ment 4-3-3, with forlan suarez and seba fernandez ….
