Swiss Line-Up announced
Swiss Coach Hitzfeld has announced his call-up list for Wednesday’s match between Uruguay & Switzerland, the real drama for Uruguay will be if Alvaro Fernandez & Mauricio Victorino are able to make it to the game. The devastating earthquake in Chile has closed down all airports in Chile for three days, Victorino who was advised last night to sleep in his car as a precaution & Fernandez were supposed to travel by land to Mendoza to catch a plane… unlikely that this will happen since the latest report from Ovación has Sebastian Coates as a late minute replacement. The Contenders (Part 2 of 8)
When Diego Maradona was named Argentinean National Team Coach, I thought it wouldn’t work, as I write this, probably 90% of Argentina believes it still won’t work. Where has the love gone? Or to quote Robert Plant, “Does anybody remember laughter?” — Maradona took Argentina to dizzying new heights, winning it all in 1986 and almost stealing a World Cup in 1990, since then he has become an Argentinean Saint, which is sort of right, he did win a World Cup & two Scudettos with Napoli, but now his highness of the ghetto is no longer compatible with Argentina, he’s gone through 102 players since taking over in late 2008, meaning he still hasn’t made up his mind regarding the final 23 man squad, the blow-out losses to Bolivia & Brazil still hurt, but still somehow despite all of the coaching miscues, Maradona managed to qualify Argentina to the World Cup. The Meaningless World Cup Trivia Entry
Most of you know already that Uruguay won 2 World Cups and finished 4th, two times throughout the history of the tournament but how familiar are you with the meaningless trivia? The tournament has changed a couple of times, most of Uruguay’s participations occurred when the tournament was only a 16 nation tourney. The tournament increased the number of nations to 24 in 1990 & in 1998 to the current 32 nations allowed now. Uruguay’s dysfunctional qualification record (1990′s) coincides with the increase in nations and the outlawing of the infamous slide tackle in 1990, which was perhaps the one rule Uruguay had a rough time getting around. Without further adieu, I give you the meaningless World Cup Trivia as it pertains to Uruguay of course: Read the rest of this entry »
The Death of the International Friendly (Part 2)

The supposed friendly between Uruguay & Belgium has been scheduled for May 27, 2010 — We’ve been down this road before especially considering the FIFA website, but it looks like Uruguay has their “second” friendly match and in Montevideo to boot. But before you book your flight to Montevideo & tell your relatives to get the Asado started, be warned that the Belgium FA website makes no mention of an upcoming match against Uruguay (1). Botafogo’s 3rd Most Important Icon?

Botafogo defeated Vasco Da Gama 2-nil today in a jammed-packed Maracana Stadium to capture the Carioca Championship. Sebastian Abreu delivered the 2nd goal by way of penalty sending the supporters of the Rio Club into a frenzy. Abreu has become so important for Botafogo’s existence, that the argument will be made for making Abreu a starter on the NT. Read the rest of this entry »
URUGUAY’S FIRST EXHIBITION OPPONENT – SWITZERLAND

Back in 2008, Uruguay was able to schedule friendlies against Colombia (2-2), Turkey (3-2), Norway (2-2), Japan (3-1) and France (0-0), all good, tough and probably highly sought-after opponents. However, in 2009, as the AUF was involved in all the internal political shenanigans, the friendlies “dried up” and Uruguay only played against Libya (3-2) and Algeria (0-1). So when the AUF announced that Uruguay would play a friendly against Switzerland, we were all rather surprised, first, that the AUF had been able to procure a friendly, and secondly, that they had been able to find a decent opponent.
