A KIND OF BLUE or How Uruguay should forget about Spain and Rip-Off Italy 2006 instead!
Borrowing a page from FourThreeThree, who wrote the recent entry Can Uruguay Be Like Spain? (1) I came away with the idea that if Uruguay can play anything like Italy did in the 2006 World Cup, then Uruguay will have no problems in the upcoming World Cup. The Heir Apparent?
In the post-vacuum of Messi bagging another trophy that sings the praises of his own glory, umm this time the FIFA World Player Award, I came away with a thought which was born out of not only the latest trophy won by La Pulga but also Argentina’s friendly with Catalunya (Catalunya demolished Argentina 4-2 without Messi by the way)… does Messi need Argentina as much as Argentina needs Messi? GROUP A OPPONENTS OVERVIEW – MEXICO
There’s no denying that, similar to Uruguay, Mexico takes its soccer seriously. I experienced it twice first-hand, having lived there during the 1994 World Cup and 1995 Copa America, the last one won by Uruguay. I was especially grateful that every single game of the 1995 Copa America was televised. Since 1994, the Mexican team has been ranked higher than 15th by FIFA and even reached as high as 4th in 1998 prior to the World Cup. Mexico is considered to be one of the top two teams in CONCACAF, normally alternating positions with the USA.
