“Where Eagles Dare”
October 10th will be part one of Uruguay’s 2 game series that sends Uruguay directly to the World Cup thereby avoiding another grueling “repechaje” series… Although Ecuador is sitting pretty in 4th place as of today, there’s no guarantee that they will benefit from this position since Ecuador has to come out to kill on October 10th as well. Ecuador has never been in this position before; they have secured the last two entries into the World Cup 1 or 2 games before the end of the qualifiers. Uruguay has the advantage believe it or not because they have already gone through this type of scenario before, Read the rest of this entry »
The “Baby Tijera” heard around the World
I didn’t read much about the Under 20 World Cup match between England & Uruguay in the English media… in fact the Guardian’s coverage of the match doesn’t say much (1) and The Sun took out a short piece on it (2) but the moral of the story is that England did not send in their best team as many of the clubs refused to allow their young players to take part in this tournament, and yes Sepp Blatter did issue a formal complaint (but who cares!). I did find a hilarious YouTube video of the goal, Read the rest of this entry »
The Fallen Idol
What was once a guilty-free love affair with a nation and it’s ghetto superstar is turning into an international train wreck, no one is sure how this will end… some don’t even care to watch anymore. Many will blame Julio Grondona, others will blame Leo Messi but the majority will turn Diego Armando Maradona into an Argentinean scapegoat of epic proportions should Argentina fail to qualify for the World Cup, it seems Argentina and most of the world media can’t wait for this to happen, almost like fate functioning on “cruise control”… Maradona is getting the kind of treatment that crooked Argentinean politicians usually get; their comeuppance. La Celeste in the (U20) World Championships!
Uruguay will be making its second consecutive appearance at the U20 World Championships being held in Egypt. That’s a pretty significant feat! Some interesting facts:
· Uruguay did NOT qualify in 2001, 2003 (when the U20 South American was held in Uruguay) and 2005.
· These three failures came after our best results in the World Championship: 2nd place in 1997 (losing to Argentina 1-2 in the Final) and 4th place in 1999 (losing to Mali 0-1).
· Uruguay has yet to win a U20 World Championship which has been organized since 1977.
· Uruguay has won the U20 South American seven times in the years 1954, 1958, 1964, 1975, 1977, 1979 and 1981. Read the rest of this entry »
The Return of La Facha, The Mad Russian Penalty Taker & What to do with Lugano…
While Botafogo can’t wait to get rid of Juan Castillo, the story is quite different with “La Facha” Carini who finally made his official 1st start for Atlético Mineiro this past Saturday. The game against Náutico resulted in a 0-0 draw… Carini had some very good saves, was constantly tested by Náutico and didn’t show signs of rust. While Botafogo is in the bottom of the standings, Atlético MG is 5th in the Brazilian Table. We can’t judge Carini on one game, but if you gave me a choice between a goalkeeper like Castillo who has been awful while playing for La Celeste in the last 3 games and Fabian Carini, I’ll take La Facha. Castillo is about to be dumped by Botafogo… Read the rest of this entry »
